Fun: Ambiguity

I love the ambiguity in this picture. It’s from the cover of a book called ‘the unhelpful travel guide’. There’s lots of ambiguity about where to draw the word-breaks, making the sentence possibly mean several different things (hence the title itself is ALSO unhelpful!).

Here’s some of the words – see what you can make of it!

越 ‘to step / stride / cross over’
越 ‘the more + towards’
往南 ‘to the south’
往 ‘to(wards)’
南越 ‘South Vietnam’
南 ‘the south’
越南 ‘Vietnam’
越 + 南 ‘the more/further south (you are)’
南越南 ‘South Vietnam’
南越南 ‘the south of South Vietnam’
